I live in new England, as well.
I paid $5,000 for a bathroom to be gutted of completely, and redone, including a new tub and tiled floor. The bathroom was 9′ X 5′. A little on the small side for a family of my size (4), but not too small that it was uncomfortable.

If you do it yourself it can be done for a lot less. You can buy the shower enclosure @ Lowe’s or Home Depot for $125-200 depending on your choice of style. You could spend more. Toilet $89 and up. Vanity w/sink or pedestal sink will effect the cost but again, can be purchased for $125 and up (way up). Ceramic tile .69/sf and up plus setting material and grout. Plus plumbing materials, light fixture, towel bar, paper holder, etc.

Bathroom in our old house was 5 x 8.

Reasonable minimum size is probably 5′ x 7′. This will accomodate a shower stall, commode, and a 30″ vanity sink base cabinet. You may be able to build your bathroom yourself for less than $2,000.00 if you have the available floor space, proximity to existing plumbing, tools, skills, time and patience. Even though it is a small space, this project requires the skills of a planner, framing/finish carpenter, plumber, electrician, drywaller, painter, and flooring installer. Hiring a contractor to build your bathroom will cost you four to five times as much.

    Good luck with your project.
