Books Worth Reading – Shantaram
Shantaram, published in the summer of 2003, is one of my favorite books to date because of a number of factors. Apart from the fact that I love autobiographies, this one has a message in every word and there is enough drama to make you read till the very end. It is a tale of true events from the author, Gregory David Roberts, life and starts off when he escapes from an Australian prison.
After his escape, Roberts comes to India where he ends up staying for the next ten years and the novel is based on his life and experiences in that wonderful country. He ends up meeting a lot of people and the experiences that he has in the city of Mumbai, ends up shaping his destiny and his future.
Shantaram is not the usual run of the mill biographical accounts that we normally come across. The book is in fact paced fairly fast such that one feels as if they are watching a movie. As an example, the events leading up to the author ending up with the name Shantaram is a wonderful little story in itself.
Lin, the author, tends to return back to his old criminal ways every now and then despite trying hard to love and honest life. He, however, realizes his mistake each time and tries to make amends for it and it’s because of this reason that I really liked the book. It carries a deep, underlying message that the path of evil will always tempt us but we can return back to the righteous path if we choose to.
While there is a love interest in the book by the name of Carla, it’s not a major part of the book. We also see Shantaram travel to Africa and Afghanistan in between to deal in illegal arms trade but later on he returns back to India. After the death of his mentor, he shuns the way of crime and violence and decides to live an honest life.
Lin continues with his journey to Sri Lanka and therein lies the hint of a sequel to this book. All said and done, I personally found this book to be an amazing one and a must read for everyone. Although it can be bought from any bookstore all across the world, I would recommend buying this from an online retailer in order to get maximum discounts on the same.
