It is absolutely fine to be just a mom. While the kids are tiny that is your main job. Many women do feel that they want to contribute to life on several different levels.
Working mothers of course have their own baliwicks.

When I had my first child, an elderly lady I worked with gave me some advise that I will never forget. She said “Don’t let being baby’s momma become your only identity.”
Mom is one of the many things I am. I’m also a wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, companion, coworker, etc. You can’t just be one thing. At different times in life, a particular role may be more important than the others but that doesn’t mean you can forget about the others and only focus on that one. If you’re just a mom, when your child grows up and doesn’t need you to be constantly by his side, you won’t know who you are or what to do and you’ll have no family and friends to help you though it.
My kids are the most important thing to me and always will be but they are not everything I need in life. A mom can find the balance between her family and interest outside of the family.
